One-click power off! New national standard for electric vehicle batteries officially implemented

Currently, the domestic new energy vehicle market continues to heat up, and new energy models have become the preferred choice for many consumers when purchasing cars. When consumers select pure electric models, range, power, exterior and interior design, and intelligent features are naturally key considerations. However, overall vehicle safety performance remains the foremost core criterion in car-buying decisions.


From July 1, 2026, two mandatory national standards, "Safety Requirements for Electric Vehicles" and "Safety Requirements for Traction Batteries for Electric Vehicles," will be officially implemented. For the first time, the mandatory requirement for a physical "one-button power-off" device will replace the traditional software-controlled power-off method, comprehensively enhancing the safety standards for electric vehicles. Both standards were organized and formulated by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Among them, "Safety Requirements for Traction Batteries for Electric Vehicles" (GB 38031—2025) was approved and published by the State Administration for Market Regulation and the National Standardization Administration on March 28, 2025, while "Safety Requirements for Electric Vehicles" (GB 18384—2025) was approved and published on December 31, 2025.


The new standard requires vehicles to be equipped with a physical "one-button power-off" device, which no longer relies on the vehicle's computer program to control the high-voltage circuit. When the vehicle is stopped and not in a charging state, the driver can mechanically cut off the high-voltage line between the entire vehicle and the battery with just one action (tapping or long pressing). Even if the vehicle's computer screen is black or the wiring harness is damaged, the power-off function can still work normally.


For the industry, the new regulations will significantly raise the barriers to entry for the complete vehicle and power battery industries, and the entire industry chain will face dual pressures of technological upgrading and cost. Small and medium-sized automobile enterprises and small and medium-sized battery supporting enterprises need to simultaneously complete high-voltage hardware transformation and battery thermal safety system reconstruction, leading to a significant increase in research and development costs and production line transformation costs. Small and medium-sized manufacturers lacking thermal safety research and development capabilities and component integration capabilities will see their living space continue to shrink. Industry production capacity, orders, and supply chain resources are accelerating towards the top enterprises with complete safety technology reserves, indicating a clear trend of industrial intensification.


This new national standard is not a short-term policy constraint, but a long-term guideline for the standardized and high-quality development of China's new energy vehicle safety system. High-voltage physical disconnection and battery explosion protection will become mandatory specifications for future vehicle models. In the medium and long term, enterprises with core self-developed safety components and integrated material supporting capabilities will continue to benefit from the industry's clearing dividends.


Overall, the new energy battery material industry has bid farewell to the era of extensive expansion. Safety compliance, independent research and development of high-end materials, and upstream and downstream collaborative support will be the core competitive themes in the coming years. The industry will continue to steadily develop towards high quality, high safety, and intensification.
